 IS THIS TOUR FOR ME?

This tour is ideal for adventurous travellers looking for a travel experience off the beaten track. Accommodation options are limited in rural Timor-Leste, whilst accommodation is basic, it is clean. We can't guarantee hot water, flushing toilets, reliable electricity, and wifi in all the locations we travel to. However, we can guarantee beautiful environments, incredible culture, and adventure! All activities are optional, however to make the most of the tour you should be comfortable snorkelling, swimming, and hiking. Good health is essential as access to medical facilities is at times limited. The roads are rough and 4W driving is required to get to our destinations, so managing car sickness is important. Are you up for the adventure?

ITINERARY

DAY 1 | TO THE MOUNTAINS

You’ll be greeted by a Timor Unearthed guide who will collect you from your accommodation. After meeting up with the rest of the group we’ll venture inland by 4WD to the base of Mt Ramelau. Along the way you’ll get stunning scenic views of coffee plantations, rice paddy fields, and farmlands. Get to know the group over dinner and a few drinks at a local guesthouse in the mountains.

DAY 2 | MT RAMELAU SUMMIT

Feeling adventurous or looking to relax instead? Today you have 2 options. Choose to rise early and trek to the summit of Mt Ramelau (4 hours return). We’ll reach the summit at sunrise and have coast to coast views across Timor-Leste! Mt Ramelau is the highest mountain in Timor-Leste at 2986m above sea level (that’s higher than any mountain in Australia). Alternative options are to sleep in and take it easy or enjoy a morning stroll through the township of Hatu Bulico with one of our local guides. After breakfast we’ll head to the township of Maubisse where we will stay for two nights at Hakmatek, a community-based eco-tourism initiative.

DAY 3 | MAUBISSE TOWNSHIP

Today you’ll explore the township of Maubisse at your leisure. Activities include, hiking, learning of the regions unique culture and traditional architecture, swimming in waterholes on the grounds of the accommodation and relaxing. For lunch we’ll visit Leublora Green School, Timor-Leste’s only environmental education facility.

DAY 4 & 5 | VILLAGE HOMESTAY

From Maubisse we head to Railaco in Ermera District, to a small village located in the hills behind Dili. Here you will spend the next two nights living with a local family and experience the subsistent lifestyle that many rural Timorese lead.  You'll be welcomed into family life and participate in daily activities that may include, cooking meals, exploring the family farm, and being involved in community activities. We’ll visit the local primary school during the lunch break for a game of soccer. You’ll visit coffee plantations and see first-hand how coffee is grown and harvested in Timor-Leste.

DAY 6 | DILI AT SUNSET

We’ll say goodbye to the host families and drive back to Dili. After a group lunch and drink on the beach the afternoon is yours to explore Dili at your own leisure. Our local guides will be available to take you around to visit sites that interest you. This will include, local handicraft markets, history and art museums. Late afternoon is best spent with a walk to the top of the Fatucama peninsula to the iconic Cristo Rei statue for sunset views over Dili. We’ll head to Agora Food Studio for an evening meal and drinks as well  as a presentation on Timor- Leste’s delicious gastro-diversity including tactile demonstrations and tastings of seasonal products.

DAY 7 & 8 | ATAURO ISLAND

We’ll catch the ferry across to Atauro Island - home to the most biodiverse coral reefs in the world. This is your chance to relax and explore the island at your leisure. The Timor Unearthed crew will arrange a bunch of fun and unique activities for you to enjoy over the next few days including guided hikes, snorkelling trips, cruises along the coastline in fishing boats, and tours of local handicraft projects. Kick back and relax in a hammock by the beach.

DAY 9 | TIME TO CELEBRATE

After catching the afternoon ferry back to Dili on the last day we’ll celebrate the journey together with dinner and drinks at one of Dili’s popular bars!
